    The 5:2 diet is based on a principle known as intermittent fasting : eat normally for five days and fast on the other two days. These two fasting days should not be consecutive. Proponents of the diet claim it causes weight loss and may also have some beneficial effects on health.

    During the 2 days of fasting, you have to restrict your food intake to a quarter of what your body needs. Men generally eat 600 calories and women 500 calories. These amounts will also depend on your level of physical activity.

    • The non-fasting days do not mean unlimited feasting. You always need to have a balance diet with healthy foods and some regular exercise.
